LOCATION

The historically famous Sri Kadambery Bhagavathy Temple is situating in Kannur Distict of Kerala State. For the pride of North Malabar the sanctum sanctorum of the temple sesated about 8km south of Thaliparamba town and 20 km north of the District capital Kannur. The temole can be viewed constructed in a lower surface amidst hills. It is believede by the ancestors that to reach the temple one has to pass through many "Kadambas" or obstacles and hence the name of the place ,temole and chira(pond)

The naturally beautiful Kadambery chira occuppies its place just behind the temple which renders peacefulness to mind and body. The picuresque scenes were copied to celluloid in the well known malayalam movie "Mayoogham" of Hariharan

Your understanding about the name "Kadambery" appears to be not corrrect. Kadambery derived from Kadambu Vryksham (tree) on which Bhagavathy Amma was first seen swinging, hence the name Kadambery.Kodallur Nambooderi saw Bhagavathi Amma swinging (naked)on a vein on a kadamba tree, and he gave his uthareeyam (randam Mundu)to bhagavathy to cover. This incident was celebrated every alternate year during Thirumudi. The Kodallur chief Namboothiri can enter Kadambery temple only once in alternate year during valiya Thirumudi day which used to be 19th of Idavam. On that day he used to give red Pattu to Bhagavathy (theyyam). Till 1950/51 Thirumudi was celebrated. I do not know what is the status now. You would be able to get more information on this from elderly people in Kadambery.
